Why Amazon Keeps Rejecting Your Product Photos (and How to Fix Every Error)

2026-04-07

Amazon just suppressed your listing. Or worse — rejected your product images during upload. The error messages are vague, and you're not sure what's wrong.

Here's every common reason Amazon rejects product photos, with the exact fix for each.

1. Background Is Not Pure White

Amazon's rule: Main image must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255).

Why it fails:

  • Your "white" background is actually light gray (RGB 240, 240, 240).
  • Shadows or gradients in the background create off-white areas.
  • The photo was taken on a white surface, but the camera's white balance made it slightly warm or cool.

The fix:

  • Don't try to manually adjust white balance in Photoshop — it's tedious and inconsistent.
  • Use an AI background removal tool that outputs true #FFFFFF white.
  • BgSwap generates Amazon-compliant pure white backgrounds automatically.

2. Product Doesn't Fill 85% of the Frame

Amazon's rule: The product must occupy at least 85% of the image frame.

Why it fails:

  • Too much whitespace around the product.
  • The product was photographed from too far away.
  • After background removal, the image wasn't cropped.

The fix:

  • Crop the image so the product fills most of the frame.
  • Leave a small margin (about 5-10%) on each side for breathing room.
  • Most image editors can auto-crop to the product bounds.

3. Text, Logos, or Watermarks on Main Image

Amazon's rule: No text, graphics, logos, watermarks, or badges on the main product image.

Why it fails:

  • "Best Seller" or "New" badges added to the main image.
  • Brand logo placed in the corner.
  • Promotional text like "50% Off" overlaid on the image.

The fix:

  • Remove all text and graphics from your main image.
  • Save promotional content for secondary images (images 2-7).
  • Brand logos can appear on the product itself (e.g., printed on the packaging) but not added digitally.

4. Wrong File Format or Size

Amazon's rule: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or GIF. At least 1000px on the longest side (1600px+ recommended for zoom). Max 10,000px.

Why it fails:

  • Image is under 1000px (common with phone screenshots or heavily compressed images).
  • File is in WebP or BMP format.
  • File size exceeds 10MB.

The fix:

  • Upload the original, uncompressed photo from your camera or phone.
  • Convert to JPEG or PNG if needed.
  • Resize to at least 1600px on the longest side for best results.

5. Multiple Products in Main Image

Amazon's rule: Main image must show only the product being sold. No accessories, props, or lifestyle elements unless included in the purchase.

Why it fails:

  • Product photographed next to accessories that aren't included.
  • Hand or model holding the product (unless it's the only way to show scale).
  • Multiple color variants shown in one image.

The fix:

  • Photograph each product individually.
  • If the listing includes accessories, show them together. If not, remove them.
  • Use secondary images for lifestyle shots and scale references.

6. Product in Packaging

Amazon's rule (for most categories): Show the actual product, not the box or packaging.

Why it fails:

  • Product photographed inside its retail box.
  • Shrink wrap or plastic packaging visible.

The fix:

  • Unbox the product and photograph it directly.
  • Exception: Some categories (e.g., collectibles, gift sets) allow or require packaging shots. Check your category's style guide.

7. Image Has Borders or Rounded Corners

Amazon's rule: No borders, color blocks, or decorative frames.

Why it fails:

  • Image editing software added a thin border.
  • The image was exported with rounded corners (common from some phone editors).

The fix:

  • Export as a standard rectangular image with no borders.
  • Check your image editor's export settings.

8. Mannequin Visible in Clothing Photos

Amazon's rule (Clothing category): Mannequins should not be visible. Use invisible/ghost mannequin technique or flat lay.

Why it fails:

  • Full mannequin (head, hands, base) visible in the photo.
  • Mannequin clips or pins visible.

The fix:

  • Use the ghost mannequin technique (photograph on mannequin, then remove it in post).
  • Or use flat lay photography.
  • AI background removal can help clean up mannequin traces.

Batch Fix: Process All Your Photos at Once

If you have dozens or hundreds of products with background issues, fixing them one by one is impractical.

BgSwap processes up to 100 products at once:

  1. Upload all your product photos
  2. AI removes every background and generates Amazon-compliant white backgrounds
  3. Download all processed images as a ZIP

$29 for 100 products. Each gets 15 background variations — white for Amazon, plus 14 others for your other marketplaces and social media.
